Clean Harbors Colfax, Louisiana, thermal treatment facility is the only commercial operation of its kind in the United States with a significantly diverse RCRA Part B, Subpart X permit. This permit allows us to deliver safe management of explosive and reactive waste. Spanning more than 700 acres, with the thermal treatment occurring on approximately 40 acres, the Colfax ordinance and munitions destruction facility provides governmental agencies, DOD, GO/COs, defense contractors, research institutions or any other generator of energetic and reactive waste, a proven resource for environmentally compliant destruction and thermal treatment of these materials. The system is backed by a team of professionals who stand ready to provide technical assistance throughout every stage of the process.
Consistent with Clean Harbors’ commitment to public health and the environment, the Colfax facility complies with the stringently enforced standards of the air quality permit granted under the Louisiana Clean Air Act State Implementation Plan, as well as other relevant state regulations and federal laws. Through emissions monitoring and testing by state officials, both the State of Louisiana’s Department of Public Health (LADPH) and Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LADEQ) concluded that Colfax operations were below the state’s ambient air toxics standards while the Colfax facility was conducting waste destruction activities. In addition, in close cooperation with the LADEQ the facility has invested extensively in best-in-class emissions monitoring technology on a voluntary basis. That data also demonstrates that our emissions are not a threat to human health or the local environment.
As part of our latest permit renewal application with the state, Clean Harbors Colfax has proposed plans to invest in a state-of-the-art contained burn system that incorporates HEPA filtration technology to remove particulate emissions in the micron size range to levels greater than 99% efficiency. State and federal regulators are currently evaluating our permit application. We are confident that this planned multi-million-dollar investment is consistent with our longstanding commitment to the health and safety of the Colfax community.
