Bio-monitoring is a process used to examine contaminant levels in soil, plants and/or animals.
The Lambton facility's bio-monitoring program, the most extensive of its kind in Ontario, ensures that activities at Lambton do not adversely affect surrounding land, plant or animal life. The program, which was initiated in 1991, helps determine if there have been any off-site environmental impacts resulting from the facility's landfill, incineration or transportation operations.
The results of the bio-monitoring program, which are shared with participating landowners and submitted annually to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, have continuously shown that the facility does not have a significantly adverse effect on surrounding crops, vegetation, or other land uses. In fact, results have shown that the environment in the area surrounding the facility is the same as in other rural areas of Ontario.
